If you grew up watching classic Westerns, the New Mexico BDR will feel like riding straight into the set—except this time, you’re the one in the saddle. This true Wild West adventure is steeped in history, with wide-open landscapes, dusty outposts, and timeless terrain that hasn’t changed much since the days of Billy the Kid.
Spanning nearly 1,200 miles from Dell City, Texas, to the Colorado border, this route was created specifically for dual-sport and adventure motorcycle riders. The ride climbs from the Guadalupe Rim into the high-elevation village of Cloudcroft, winds through the remote canyons and mountains of the Gila National Forest, and finishes with some of the most scenic backcountry in the state—open meadows, aspen groves, and rugged ridgelines north of Abiquiu.
Expect long stretches between towns, endless dispersed camping, and a deep connection with the land as you ride through historic mining routes, wild horse country, and desert-to-forest transitions. Must-ride segments include Chloride Canyon, lakeside campgrounds, and the remote high country near the Arizona state line.
Ideal Riding Season: Late May through June and September through October. July and August are monsoon season—expect extreme heat, flash floods, and difficult conditions not suited for travel.
This is New Mexico backcountry riding at its finest—raw, remote, and rich in character. If you’re chasing solitude and wide-open two-track, the NMBDR is your next great ride.
