The Lost Coast BDR-X is a rugged 500-mile figure-eight backcountry route that dives deep into the wild, undeveloped edge of Northern California’s Lost Coast—one of the last truly remote stretches of Pacific coastline in the continental United States. Designed by Backcountry Discovery Routes, this route delivers an unforgettable blend of remote dirt roads, legendary pavement, towering redwood forests, and dramatic coastal scenery.
Beginning and ending in Fort Bragg, the Lost Coast BDR-X threads together hidden forest tracks along the Pacific, winds through ancient redwood groves, and climbs into the King Range and Sinkyone Wilderness, where steep ridgelines, river canyons, and ocean views collide. Riders will experience constant elevation changes, endless switchbacks, and ever-changing terrain—each mile revealing new perspectives of rugged coastline, mist-covered ridges, and dense Northern California forest.
This route seamlessly blends remote backcountry riding with stretches of world-class paved roads, linking historic coastal towns that offer fuel, food, and a dose of laid-back California character. The result is a ride that feels both wild and deeply rooted in the region’s rich logging, fishing, and frontier history.
From fog-shrouded ridgelines to secluded beaches rarely seen by travelers, the Lost Coast BDR-X delivers a rare sense of solitude and scale. It’s a route defined by open space, raw beauty, and the feeling of true escape—where ocean, forest, and sky move together far from crowds and congestion.
Best riding season: Late May through October. Seasonal road closures and wet conditions typically prevent completion of the full loop during winter and early spring.
Whether you’re riding an adventure motorcycle or exploring Northern California’s backcountry on a dual-sport machine, the Lost Coast BDR-X Map is your guide to one of the most remote, scenic, and rewarding backcountry rides in the West.
