The Grand Alpine Loop is a 142-mile circuit through the heart of the San Juan Mountains, beginning and ending in Telluride — one of Colorado's most iconic mountain towns. The route eases you in with Last Dollar Road, a stunning ridgeline traverse with sweeping views across the Uncompahgre Plateau and Mount Sneffels before dropping into Ridgway and Ouray. From there the terrain gets serious — the loop incorporates the iconic 60-mile Alpine Loop, connecting Ouray, Lake City, and Silverton via Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass, pushing well above 12,000 feet into open tundra with exposed shelf roads and rocky climbs that demand a capable 4x4 or an experienced dual-sport rider. But where the classic Alpine Loop ends, this route keeps going — adding another 80 miles of San Juan splendor before finishing dramatically over Ophir Pass and descending back into Telluride. This route is progressive by design — approachable at the start, unforgettable by the end. Summer and early fall access only; most passes are snow-closed into June.
This waterproof, tear-resistant half-sheet map covers the full circuit with expanded callout boxes highlighting the best stops, overlooks, fuel points, and can't-miss highlights along both legs. Built for adventure motorcyclists and overlanders who want to navigate with confidence on paper — and backed by a free GPX track download at butlermaps.com.
