The map points out the dirt roads and grades them as good, better, and best. I did not give them the 5 stars because Butler did not rate the dirt roads by difficulty. I'm going next summer to ride in sections 8 and 11. I give my opinion of the difficulty of the roads in a later comment.
Hi Michael, thank you for your comment. We get this question alot, let us explain why we do not rank the riding difficulty of unpaved roads. As you can imagine there is a vast difference in the ability to rank paved roads versus unpaved. Paved roads, by and large, do not change with storms and weather. Unpaved roads do - matter of fact, they can go from easy to expert from just one storm. Additionally, road riding abilities are pretty standard and easy to disseminate. However offroad riding abilites are much more difficult to ascertain. Depending on where you live (elevation for instance) and the type of riding you normally do and our comfortable with, depicts how 'good' of a rider you are and what level of difficulty your own personal scale may be. All of these issues come into play when deciding what rider can ride which road, and what is 'easy' or 'difficult' for each - it simply is not the same for everyone. For instance, a person who lives in the midwest and rides flat terrain at sea level, with very little rock will have a much more difficult time coming out west and riding 12,000' rocky mountain passes, than a person who lives in Colorado and rides them regularly. The scale of difficulty is not near the same for those two riders. Additionally the type of motorcycle you are riding would be a big determining factor in ranking the difficulty of most unpaved roads - a rider on a big BMW GS is going to find many more roads difficult than a rider on a much smaller and lighter KTM 690 or 500. Their scale of difficutly would be very different as well. So, as you can see, it is impossible to rank unpaved roads for the general public, there are simply too many factors out of our control, and the variances between riders skill and motorcycle play too big of a role to set difficulty standards/ratings for all. I hope this helps clarify why we cannot, and do not, rank unpaved roads for riding difficulty. Thank you!
Have been using Butler Maps since 2022 for planning our Colorado and other western USA adventure rides. Excellent maps with superior detail and loads of other useful information and very durable. If your riding offroad with just a GPS, these maps are a must have backup as most other maps don't have the detail needed so you can find your way out of the backcountry.
